As
we indicated in the introduction, this chapter is intended to serve
two purposes: first, to identify some of the practitioners who may be
willing to be associated with local CLGs and CLACs. Secondly, to provide
an alternative guide to firms and chambers for students seeking placements
and legal training.
We also include at the end of the chapter the addresses of all law centres
in Britain. We suggest that they be represented on the executive committees
of local CLGs.
Solicitors'
Firms
Needless
to say, guides to practice opportunities in the City and in large
practices serving private clients are readily available. This is not
the case for firms which have a commitment to legal aid practice and
to dealing with the problems of the poorer sections of the community.
This problem is exacerbated by the fact that law centres, where many
students would ideally like to serve their training period, are hindered
by funding problems and the training regulations from taking 'trainee
Solicitors'.
We thought, therefore, that it would be worthwhile attempting to compile
an alternative guide to law firms to assist students. To do this we
sought the help of the law centres.
We thank the firms listed for their help in compiling this guide.
Obviously, inclusion does not indicate that firms subscribe to the
views of the CLGs or the views expressed in this book. Equally, we
are aware that there will be many other firms who would, no doubt,
have liked to have been included, but whom we failed to reach.
The
guide identifies firms by geographical area and areas of work.
These
firms are willing to consider applications for trainee solicitors,
vacation placements, and outdoor court clerks. Only a firms major
areas of practice are listed.
